A classic drink in Spain, sangria brings together some of the best local flavors and ingredients. It’s not clear when this drink originated, or even where, but today it’s popular all over the country. Sangria is similar to cava in that geography matters when it comes to the name. EU law states that the drink must be made in Spain or Portugal to be a sangria. Any other sangria must have its origin marked; a sangria made in England must be labeled as “English Sangria,” for example.

Sangria has many variations and can be made from a plethora of ingredients. The basics, however, stay the same. Wine, fresh fruit, and subtle spices come together to create something bright and delicious. You can use red or white wine, or even cava, and then throw in some freshly-chopped fruit. Add spices, and voila! You’ve got a sangria. Let’s look at a traditional Spanish sangria recipe and whip up Spain’s most famous drink!

Once you have all of your ingredients together, you’re ready to prepare a pitcher of fresh, tasty sangria! Follow these easy steps of the sangria recipe and you’ll be sipping on your delicious beverage in no time.

  1. Pour the bottle of wine into a large pitcher. The pitcher needs to be large enough to hold the wine, chopped fruit, and ice cubes. Stir in the sugar until it is completely dissolved. Additionally, if you wanted to add in brandy or liquor, you can do so at this stage.
  2. Juice the lemon and the oranges and add the juice to the wine pitcher. You can save the peels for decoration and flavor, so put these off to the side. Be sure not to let any citrus seeds fall into the pitcher.
  3. Next, stir the wine mixture well so that the juice and sugar combine. After stirring, toss in the cinnamon stick and a bit of the orange peel.
  4. Now you’re ready to peel and dice the peaches and apples and introduce them to the sangria mixture. After doing this, let the sangria sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours or more to let the fruity flavors meld and come together.
  5. When you’re ready to serve, serve your sangria over ice so it’s chilled. Also you can add in lemon or orange soda for a bubbly kick. Enjoy!
