These are some of the best things to see and do during your trip that will let you experience the city with all of your senses!
Stroll through the Bairro Alto
Bairro Alto is a neighborhood in Lisbon that dates all the way back to the early 1500s. Today, it is quite bohemian, bursting with shops, bars, and restaurants, lining sloping streets. Walk around the winding streets, or take a ride on the Elevador da Bica, a funicular preserved from the city’s past. One of the best things to do in Lisbon is to take in the views of the sun setting over the River Tagus. The Miradouro de Santa Catarina in Bairro Alto is just the place to do this. This lookout point has amazing views of the city, and is the perfect place to end the day and start the night. Bairro Alto has a buzzing nightlife scene that you won’t want to miss!

Explore Belém (and eat some sweets!)
Belem is the southernmost parish in Lisbon, and home to many of its most famous monuments. No trip to Lisbon is complete without a hike up the Torre de Belém, a 16th-century tower. It was once a seaside fortification and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to its historic significance. Nearby, you will find the Monasterio de los Jeronimos, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Construction first began 1501, and took about 100 years to finish building. Visitors can explore both of these monuments and be transported to the Lisbon of old.
Lastly, one of the most important things to do in Lisbon is try a pastéis de Belém! These famous tarts go back centuries in Lisbon, and the best place to get them is at the famous bakery, Pastéis de Belém. This bakery has been serving up mouth-watering tarts and other Portuguese baked goods since 1837. If you have a sweet tooth, this is something that you absolutely can’t miss!
Go back in time at Castelo de São Jorge
What European capital is complete without a castle? Castelo de São Jorge sits on top of a hill and offers visitors some amazing views over Lisbon. This hill has had fortifications built on top for more than 2000 years, but the current castle dates back to the 10th century. Its age is evident in its Moorish architecture that can be seen throughout the castle. This is one of the best places to go to really understand Lisbon’s history, since the very beginning.
